Some iTaukei clans and tribes could face extinction if young people continue to become involved in illicit drugs and other social problems, Youth and Sports Minister Jese Saukuru has warned.
Mr Saukuru said the growing involvement of young iTaukei in drug use, cultivation and distribution posed a serious threat to families and the future of communities.
“Some clans and tribes are already facing the risk of being wiped out, yet we are now seeing an increasing number of our young people becoming involved in illicit drugs,” he said.
His comments come as iTaukei youth record high numbers in Fiji’s HIV and drug possession statistics.
Speaking to a youth group at Dogoru Village in Macuata, Mr Saukuru said continued drug abuse could further weaken iTaukei families and communities.
“If this continues, drug abuse could cause further harm to iTaukei families and communities and threaten the future of our people.”
A total of 2446 drug cases were recorded nationwide between May 2024 and May 2025, with 1506 involving people aged 18 to 35, making young adults the largest age group involved.
Mr Saukuru said the issue could not be left solely to Government agencies and called for stronger action at community level.
He urged parents, traditional leaders, youth groups and communities to take greater responsibility for guiding young people.
“Communities need to work together to reduce drug use and distribution and report suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.”
He said protecting young people was critical to preserving the strength, identity and future of iTaukei communities.
