A family’s joyous reunion turned into heartbreak when Suilesh Kumari, 73, and Hail Ram, 85, lost their son and breadwinner, Amit Kumar, a day after returning from New Zealand.
Amit was killed in a road accident in Rakiraki on Monday afternoon.
The 43-year-old was driving along Naqoro, Rakiraki when a bus driven by a 51-year-old man allegedly veered onto his lane, resulting in a head-on collision.
His brother, Rakesh, said the family was still struggling to come to terms with their loss.
Their cousin, Divendra, said he saw him moments before the crash.
“I was just on my way to town, and he (Amit) passed my vehicle and we waved at each other and made a gesture that we would meet in town,” he said.
“A few minutes later I received a phone call from my friend that Amit was involved in an accident.”
Divendra said he later called Amit’s sister in Auckland, New Zealand, to relay the news because he did not have the courage to break it to Amit’s parents.
Mr Kumar described Amit as a responsible man who worked hard to support his parents while his two siblings lived in Suva and New Zealand.
Police investigations continue.
