Suva City Council is urgently looking for an alternative site for fish vendors because of safety concerns over the existing fish market structure.
Council chairman Tevita Boseiwaqa said the structure posed a danger and needed to be vacated before it could be strengthened and redeveloped.
“It’s quite urgent because of the danger the current fish market is subjected to,” he said.
He said the council was assessing other areas where vendors could operate because the available space was already limited.
“I know it’s quite full and we are looking at other areas where they can operate.”
Mr Boseiwaqa said the immediate priority is to stop people from operating from the existing structure while plans are made to strengthen the facility.
“First of all, we should, you know, kind of no one to be operating from here and we have to improve and redevelop to strengthen that place,” he added.
He said he would follow up with directors and other officials responsible for the redevelopment.
The chairman said the site had originally been a street before its conversion into a fish market.
He added that the council would continue discussions on identifying a temporary operating area and redevelop the existing site.
