LUKE Vasu has been handed one of the Drua’s toughest jobs — turning Fiji’s natural athleticism into the physical strength and durability needed to compete with the best in Super Rugby Pacific.
The Suvavou-born performance specialist returns home with experience across Australia, New Zealand and Japan, bringing with him a high-performance background that could change how the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua prepare for the demands of professional rugby.
Appointed Head of Athletic Performance ahead of the 2027 Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season, Vasu will oversee the physical preparation and development of the franchise’s players.
His experience spans the NSW Waratahs in Australia, Hurricanes Poua and provincial rugby in New Zealand, and Toyota Industries Shuttles in Japan.
That journey has exposed him to different approaches to strength and conditioning, speed development, workload management, GPS monitoring, recovery and rehabilitation.
Now comes the bigger test – adapting those lessons to the Drua.
Super Rugby Pacific is a brutal examination of a player’s body. The speed, contact, travel and intensity leave little room for poor preparation.
For the Drua to make the next step, talent alone will not be enough.
Players must be able to reproduce their best performances week after week.
That is where Vasu’s role becomes critical.
His challenge will not simply be to make players bigger or stronger. It will be to build a performance system that improves durability, recovery and consistency while allowing Fijian players to retain the speed and flair that make them dangerous.
His experience overseas could provide the missing link between natural ability and sustained performance.
Vasu has seen first-hand how professional teams use science, data and structured preparation to get more from their athletes.
Now he has the chance to bring that knowledge home.
“I am truly excited and grateful for the opportunity to join the Drua vuvale,” Vasu said.
For Vasu, the appointment is a homecoming.
For the Drua, it could be the beginning of a harder, smarter and more professional approach to physical performance.
The challenge is clear.
Build a team that can still run hard, hit hard and finish strong when others begin to fade.
That is where Vasu’s real test begins.
