The Council of Rotuma has prohibited international digital content creator Anthony Perez, of A. Perez Voyages, from visiting Rotuma, citing his failure to follow established cultural and administrative protocols.

In an official statement, the Council said Mr Perez had publicly expressed his intention to visit the island but had neither sought nor obtained the formal permission required for non-resident visitors.

“Following review of the matter the Council has decided that Mr. Perez is not permitted to enter or travel to Rotuma,” the statement said.

The Council said the decision followed a complete failure to comply with established procedures governing visits to the island.

It also raised concerns about the nature of the content Mr Perez intended to produce during his proposed visit.

“As a prominent digital content creator broadcasting on global social platforms, Mr. Perez’s intended activities carry significant reach,” the Council said.

“Because he failed to engage with the Council of Rotuma, it remains entirely unknown what specific elements of our island, culture and community he plans to feature in his content.”

The Council said the lack of transparency was a primary reason permission could not be granted.

It also revealed that members of the Rotuman community had raised concerns about Mr Perez’s intentions and the potential impact of his visit.

The Council stressed that it had a responsibility to protect Rotuma’s cultural heritage, community privacy and environment.

“We cannot risk the invented exposure of our traditional lifestyle, sacred sites, and indigenous customs to a global audience,” the statement said.

The Council maintained that protecting the island’s identity and its people remained its priority.

“The Council of Rotuma is committed to safeguarding our identity and people,” it said.

“We trust that Mr. Perez will respect this final directive, honor the concerns of our community, and adjust his travel itineraries.”
