The door remains open for the Fainu brothers.
Latu, Samuela and Sione Fainu have been named in the Vodafone Fiji Bati’s 40-member extended squad for the Rugby League World Cup despite still needing to establish their Fijian heritage before they can be cleared by International Rugby League.
The Wests Tigers trio have been given additional time to provide the required documentation proving their Fijian lineage.
Bati head coach Mick Potter remains hopeful the issue will be resolved before the deadline for the final 23-member squad.
“That’s still pending at the moment. We’re still waiting, so the international board will be meeting and we’re hopeful of a positive outcome,” Potter said.
The inclusion of the brothers highlights the strong influence of the Tigers in Potter’s squad.
The Tigers have several players in the extended group, including co-captain Apisai Koroisau, Jahream Bula, Sunia Turuva, Solomone Saukuru and Josese Lanyon, alongside the Fainu brothers.
Koroisau will provide vital experience and leadership, while Canterbury Bulldogs enforcer Viliame Kikau remains one of the most powerful forwards in the Bati set-up.
The squad also boasts considerable NRL and international experience, with players such as Jacob Saifiti, Kurt Donoghoe, Caleb Navale, Brandon Wakeham and Kitione Kautoga adding depth.
Former NRL stars Maika Sivo, Semi Valemei, Waqa Blake and Taane Milne further strengthen Potter’s options.
Three Fiji-based players have also earned selection in the extended squad, providing an important link to the domestic game and a pathway for local talent.
Fiji faces a daunting World Cup campaign against the Cook Islands, Australia and New Zealand.
Potter, however, is not travelling simply to make up the numbers.
“We’re not going there to lose, we are going there to win.”
For now, the Bati’s biggest selection question rests with the Fainus — and whether their Fijian story can be officially proven in time.
