FIJI’S second wave of COVID-19 may have contributed to the increase in Fijians rushing to get vaccinated.
Head of Fiji’s Vaccination Taskforce Dr Rachel Devi said they had noted an uptake in the number of individuals putting their hand up to get the first dose of the Oxford AstraZeneca jab.
“People are now realising the importance of getting the vaccinations and the protection it gives,” she said.
“The second wave could be a contributor but whatever the reasons, honestly, it’s really good that more people are coming out to get vaccinated.
“Ultimately, these vaccines are for their protection.”
She said Fijians who received their vaccines this week should expect the next dose in July.
A total of 25,000 vaccines were expected to be administered this week with the Western Division being allocated 20,000 of the first doses.
As of May 5, Fiji has a total of 39 active COVID-19 cases.
