Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has confirmed the resignation of acting Attorney-General Siromi Turaga following controversy surrounding an explicit video circulating on social media allegedly involving the Cabinet minister.
Mr Rabuka’s confirmation comes after he earlier indicated that Mr Turaga could face suspension if allegations of misconduct were established.
The Prime Minister had previously said he was yet to speak to Mr Turaga, who was overseas at the time, and stressed that the allegations remained unverified.
Mr Rabuka also maintained that he had not viewed the video and would not make any judgment before hearing Mr Turaga’s explanation.
He had indicated that disciplinary action, including suspension, could be considered if misconduct was established.
The controversy follows a previous incident involving an explicit video allegedly linked to another Cabinet minister in the current Government.
Mr Rabuka had insisted that the same standards of accountability would apply to all ministers.
Further details are also awaited on who will assume responsibility for the Attorney-General’s portfolio following his resignation.
