The national road death toll has risen to 41 following a tragic head-on collision along the Queens Highway near Nabukavesi last night, which claimed the lives of two 26-year-old drivers.

The victims have been identified as a police officer who was off duty and travelling to his home in Nabukavesi, and a salesman residing in Navua.

According to Police, initial information suggests that the salesman allegedly overtook several vehicles along a double line before colliding head-on with the vehicle driven by the police officer.

However, Police stressed that the circumstances surrounding the accident remain subject to an ongoing investigation.

The impact of the collision left both drivers trapped in their vehicles, requiring assistance from National Fire Authority officers to recover them.

Both men were rushed to Navua Hospital, where medical officials confirmed their deaths.

The latest fatalities have pushed Fiji’s national road death toll to 41, compared with 58 deaths recorded during the same period last year.

The accident comes amid continued concerns over dangerous driving practices, particularly overtaking in prohibited areas along major highways.

Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision are continuing.
