Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu has nominated Opposition MPs Alvick Maharaj, Parveen Bala and Jone Usamate to serve on the Special Parliamentary Committee tasked with reviewing the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026.
The three MPs will join Mr Seruiratu as the four Opposition representatives on the 11-member committee responsible for examining the proposed constitutional amendments.
Under the committee’s proposed composition, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka will serve as chairperson, with Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka as deputy chairperson.
Other members include Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad, Siromi Turaga, Filimoni Vosarogo, Lynda Tabuya and Mosese Bulitavu.
The committee has been tasked with scrutinising the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026, receiving submissions from members of the public and interested stakeholders, and considering other matters relating to the proposed amendments referred to it by Parliament.
Under the parliamentary motion establishing the committee, it is required to report back to Parliament with its findings and recommendations within 30 days of the Bill’s second reading.
The nominations come as the committee prepares to begin nationwide public consultations on Thursday, October 15.
The first consultation will be held at the Suva Civic Centre from 9am to 12pm, followed by another session at Vunimono High School Hall in Nausori from 5pm to 8pm.
Further consultations are scheduled for Navua, Nadroga, Nadi and Lautoka on Friday and Saturday.
The public consultation process is expected to provide individuals, civil society organisations and other stakeholders with an opportunity to express their views on the proposed constitutional changes.
The Special Committee’s findings and recommendations will form part of Parliament’s consideration of the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026.
