The Ministry of Policing and Communications has launched an investigation into a suspected cyberattack targeting a regional organisation based in Suva, following concerns raised by the United States Embassy.

Minister for Policing and Communications Ioane Naivalurua confirmed that the Ministry was investigating and monitoring developments surrounding the reported cybersecurity incident.

In a statement issued yesterday, Mr Naivalurua said the Ministry had taken note of the public statement issued by the US Embassy regarding the suspected breach.

“The Ministry is investigating and monitoring developments relating to the reported cyberattack and encourages government, NGOs and the private sector to take preventative action and harden the security of their respective digital systems.”

The statement follows allegations by the US Embassy that hackers linked to China had targeted a Suva-based regional organisation.

The Chinese Embassy has rejected the allegations, criticising what it described as politically motivated accusations.

Mr Naivalurua urged organisations across Fiji to strengthen their cybersecurity measures and remain vigilant against potential threats to their digital infrastructure.

“Organisations are to maintain appropriate cybersecurity safeguards and continuous monitoring of their networks.”

He also reminded organisations that cybersecurity incidents should be reported to Fiji’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT).

“Any cybersecurity incident in Fiji should be reported to Fiji CERT through the email address: fiji-cert@digitalfiji.gov.fj.”

The Minister reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to protecting Fiji’s digital infrastructure and strengthening the country’s ability to respond to emerging cyber threats.

“The Fiji Government remains committed to strengthening cybersecurity resilience and promoting a safe and secure digital environment in Fiji and the wider Pacific region.”

The Ministry has not disclosed the identity of the regional organisation reportedly targeted or confirmed whether its systems were compromised.

Investigations into the reported incident are continuing.
