A special birthday dedication

This poem was inspired by a myriad of moments and memories in my life and from observations about the life of people I have met.

Foremost, the poem is a variation of my favourite nursery rhyme in childhood – ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.’

I once knew a little girl in my childhood who would cast her gaze upwards each night when the stars shone bright and attempt to count the countless stars twinkling in the sapphire sky. The sapphire sky was a London sky in the 1980’s, with stars of various size and shimmer. Her eyes would linger upon them and she engaged in the timeless tradition of wishing upon a twinkling star with much faith, joy and innocence throughout her childhood and into young adulthood.

Good tidings

Many people believe in and make a wish for various reasons – emotional, psychological, future planning – and, in some cases, to fill a heart with hope during a period of personal tribulation(s). In such a situation, a wish is released to articulate what one truly seeks – from a personal goal to a (day) dream. This can also serve as motivation to strive to achieve a vision for the future – whilst overcoming obstacles in the present time.

Wish connection

A shooting star

A candle on a cake

A rainbow

A wish charm (jewellery)

A horseshoe

A prayer

Nature – a dandelion, a flower, a bird, a butterfly, sunrise/dawn, water and similar symbols of good fortune

The deeper purpose of a wish connection is to secure contentment and continuity in life. Often, to make a wish is an expression of personal aspiration which serves as an inspiration to undertake the necessary action for positive achievement. It also serves to renew the sparkle in a strained spirit; just as twinkling stars offer Light in a midnight sky.

Wisdom in a wish

Although the poem was composed to radiate a positive aura, from observations I have made in life, it is a sad fact that many people do not comprehend the adage- “Be careful what you wish for. It may come true.’ This adage is less a warning and more the Word of Wisdom of unintended consequences.

– A wish for wealth – health and happiness is often ignored

– A wish for professional success – character and integrity is not considered

– A wish for fame and fortune – to share the spotlight with those who encouraged one on their journey is dismissed

– A wish for personal success – to show gratitude always for those that nurtured and cared for one through the years is forgotten

– A wish for formal education/knowledge – skills and wisdom are not a priority

– A wish for someone when the other person is wishing for someone else – this becomes a tragic game of squandering half your life on the wrong person

The absence of wisdom in a wish, transforms life into a ceaseless cycle of pursuits – status, material acquisitions, external validation – a chase that too often leaves one in a state of emptiness and fear (of failure), rather than a state of empowerment and fulfillment (content and a sense of Purpose).

” We plan a lot of things but in the end, life follows the script written by God/Destiny.” – Swami Vivekananda

The approach of Swami Vivekananda was not of passive fatalism but positivism and faith to how one’s journey unfolds. He knew that decision determines Destiny.

A wish is a decision that a person makes.

A wish is a word that a person speaks. Beware the power of words.

Perfect Time

Likewise, there are many people I met in life who made a wish in dire circumstances and complemented their wish with their Willpower and wisdom of discernment.

– A wish for health renewed – they abandoned their lifestyle patterns and engaged in routines that prolonged their life

– A wish for material success – they knew their limit and how to maintain their success

– A wish for education/knowledge – they pursued their purpose with dedication and diligence. Later, their voice could speak for those not heard

– A wish for skills/talent – they mastered their craft and taught others. Later, it would be their legacy

– A wish for a happy home – a family that prays together, stays together – through a storm or days of sunshine

Such wishes are made for the purpose of collaboration and community – not competition to derail others on their journey. Therefore, such people possessed the wisdom to know that their wishes – if sincere – would be delivered at the Perfect Time: in alignment with their positive energy, vibration, willpower, life-force and aura.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

The little girl I knew in childhood who would cast her gaze upwards to the sapphire sky and engage in the timeless tradition of wishing upon a twinkling star with much faith, joy and innocence…….was Me.
