Former Fiji Sugar Corporation board member Arvind Singh says FSC is wasting money on carting cane to the mills by rail.
Mr Singh said Fiji was facing a shortage of labourers to manually harvest sugarcane.
“I must tell the Government to wake up,” Mr Singh said.
“The costs of FSC should be investigated. About 80 per cent of cane is delivered by truck and 20 per cent by rail.
“So, if 20 per cent is by rail, it is more costly than the trucks. When the rail goes from Ba to Tavua to bring the sugar cane, it is very costly. FSC must look at how we can save money.”
Mr Singh said it was impossible for FSC to build tramlines.
“And thinking about building tramlines and bringing trams, that is not going to help the industry.
“Before we had 22,000 canefarmers and that was a lot. Everyone was busy in the farm, they had interest in the sugar cane farm.
“Slowly the numbers have decreased, and we have about 10,000 farmers now.”
