A serious incident involving a truck and the Navua Bridge earlier this month could have severed a major transport link and caused severe disruption to the movement of people, goods and essential services.
The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) confirmed it was aware of the incident, which also damaged the height restriction bar installed to prevent oversized vehicles from reaching the bridge.
The FRA, in a statement, said the potential impact would have been severe and devastating to the travelling public, impacting on the movement of people, goods and essential services.
The authority said its bridge team had inspected the structure following the incident, but its report was still being prepared.
“Yes, the bridge team has inspected but their report is currently in progress, and the findings will inform us of any further action that may be required.”
The statement stated height restriction bars were installed at identified critical infrastructure, particularly bridges, as part of measures to protect its assets.
However, enforcement of vehicle height and weight restrictions rests with the Land Transport Authority.
“The legislative authority for vehicles enforcement on our roads, including weight and height restrictions, is vested with the Land Transport Authority (LTA).”
The FRA confirmed it maintained communication with LTA and police on road compliance, safety and enforcement.
The authority also confirmed its communications team monitored serious incidents and road safety concerns shared publicly on social media.
The bridge inspection report is expected to determine whether the incident caused any damage requiring further action.
