Police and Social Welfare have launched investigations into allegations of abuse and neglect involving two children who were removed from a Lautoka home last night.
The Fiji Police Force confirmed officers from both agencies attended the Sukanaivalu Road property following reports that the children were allegedly victims of abuse and neglect.
“The two children were removed from the said house and placed in the care of a relative residing in Lautoka,” Police said.
Police said despite efforts by officials, the children’s mother did not want to leave with them.
The case gained attention after a concerned resident posted allegations on social media claiming the children had repeatedly sought assistance and that police had previously been contacted about incidents at the home.
Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran subsequently confirmed authorities had intervened.
“Thank you for the alert, children have been placed in safety,” Ms Kiran said on social media.
Police have not yet disclosed whether anyone has been questioned or whether charges are being considered.
The Fiji Police Force also reminded the public that failure to report suspected child abuse is an offence under the Child Care and Protection Act 2024.
“Investigations by both departments into the matter continues,” Police said.
The investigation is expected to examine the allegations surrounding the children’s treatment and circumstances at the home.
