The Fiji Sevashram Sangha Library was officially inaugurated yesterday, opening a new resource centre with more than 10,000 books on Indian history, culture, language and literature.
The project received $14,955 through the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs’ Learning and Development Grant Category for the 2024-2025 financial year.
Chief guest, Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Culture, Heritage and Arts, Charan Jeath Singh said the grant was used to provide library shelves, tables, chairs and a computer, while books previously procured by the Sangam had been organised and made accessible.
“I understand the library houses more than 10,000 books covering areas such as Indian history, culture, language, and literature,” he said.
The collection includes research and reference materials, encyclopedias of Hinduism, short stories, poetry, speeches and presentations by former Indian presidents and prime ministers.
“This is therefore much more than a room filled with books. It is a place of knowledge, it is a place of learning, and importantly, it is a place where culture, history, and heritage can be preserved and passed on from one generation to the next.”
Mr Singh said the ministry remained committed to preserving Fiji’s diverse cultural heritage.
He also announced work had begun on establishing a Girmit Museum in Lautoka, with discussions underway with the Indian High Commission.
The ministry is also working to create a digital space for Girmit records.
Encouraging students to use the library, Mr Singh said technology had transformed access to information, but reading and critical thinking remained important.
