DEFENCE leaders from Fiji and Australia have moved to reassure the public over major regional defence commitments, emphasizing that the agreements serve to protect communities rather than compromise sovereignty.
Addressing concerns raised by traditional Fijian leaders regarding the transparency of the Vuvale Partnership and the Ocean of Peace Alliance, Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua welcomed open discussion while reaffirming the state’s obligation to safeguard its citizens.
“In a democratic society, we value varying opinions about our life,” he said.
“It’s an important democratic process for people to be able to share their views openly, and I’m glad that in Fiji today, people have the freedom and the space to speak their mind.”
Mr Tikoduadua dismissed assertions that the Government was operating in secrecy, highlighting that extensive public consultations had occurred alongside formal parliamentary discussions.
He stressed that security measures were designed purely for protection.
“We’re not here to compete with anyone,it’s keeping our family safe, and ultimately, we’ll do our best to keep our family safe.”
Australian Assistant Defence Minister Peter Khalil echoed these sentiments, describing the Vuvale Union and Ocean of Peace Alliance as vital frameworks for mutual aid.
Mr Khalil emphasized that the partnership delivers tangible security support, particularly against pressing regional threats like the illicit drug trade.
“These are the most significant agreements where we come to each other’s assistance in times of need,”he said.
Mr Khalil outlined specific technical support Australia plans to provide, including air surveillance and advanced maritime assets.
“We are negotiating the acquisition of ‘blue bottles’ for Fiji, which are uncrewed surface vessels with six months of endurance to interdict and deter illegal movement.”
Mr Khalil noted that the alliance also tackles broader challenges such as climate change and terrorism, grounded in shared values to preserve peace and long-term security across the Pacific region.
