Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua says he is holding close discussions with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander over constitutional immunity, as debate continues over whether protections contained in the 2013 Constitution should remain in place.
Speaking in an interview yesterday, Mr Tikoduadua said the draft Constitution (Amendment) Bill retained the existing immunity provisions, but urged Fijians to allow the constitutional review process to continue before a final determination is made.
“The draft is clear,” he said.
When asked about calls for the removal of immunity clauses, he said the issue was part of the national conversation and should be considered through the ongoing review process.
“I’m having very close discussions with the RFMF commander and the institution about their views.”
He confirmed that the military’s position was already public and had been submitted to the Constitutional Review Commission for the removal of the immunity provision.
“The RFMF plays a significant part in looking after Fiji’s security so we value their contribution.”
He cautioned against attempts to get ahead of the consultation process.
“Let’s allow this conversation to occur within the time that we have, and that is also to include the immunity provision.”
He said differences of opinion were part of the process and that Fijians should have the opportunity to make their views known before a decision was reached.
