TAILEVU native Leone Tagicakibau has called for greater youth representation in national leadership, including appointments to boards and statutory bodies.

He made the submission during a public consultation on the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 in Rakiraki.

Mr Tagicakibau said young people were under-represented in decision-making and needed more opportunities to contribute to national policies and laws.

“There is a lesser representation of young people where I believe that our voices could be heard, and we may make decisions into the amendment of laws in our country,” he said.

He said appointing young people to boards and statutory bodies would empower them to play a more active role in national development.

Mr Tagicakibau acknowledged that many young people were expected to contest the upcoming general election.

However, he said youth participation should extend beyond electoral politics.

Mr Tagicakibau said young people should be recognised not only as future leaders but also as contributors to decision-making today.
