FREEHOLD land should be protected under entrenched constitutional provisions to safeguard private investment and provide stability in land ownership, says Rakiraki farmer Hazrat Ali.
Speaking at a public consultation on the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026, Mr Ali said most freehold land was owned by minorities and needed protection, particularly as their numbers declined.
“Otherwise, in the next 15 to 20 years, it can be easily converted by changing the Constitution,” he said.
Mr Ali said Fiji had three types of land namely iTaukei land, freehold land, and State land.
He estimated that about 92 per cent of land in Fiji was iTaukei land.
Mr Ali also praised Lands Minister Filimoni Vosarogo for his farming activities, saying the minister’s example had inspired him.
He said he had previously lived in a residential area where he could not farm before acquiring a lease on State land,
