A tertiary student accused of causing the death of Jone Vuinakelo has signalled his intention to challenge the admissibility of his police interview, claiming officers questioned him while he was under the influence of alcohol.
Defence lawyer Kalisito Maisamoa confirmed the challenge on behalf of his client, Aisake Lovobalavu, before Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu, contesting the voluntariness of the full admissions made in the recorded interview.
Mr Lovobalavu faces one count of manslaughter. Police allege that the 30-year-old victim was found with severe facial injuries at Nauluvatu Settlement in Suva on Sunday, March 15.
Mr Maisamoa stated that the interview took place directly following a drinking session, and that his client was intoxicated during prolonged questioning. He also claimed that some answers in the interview transcript appeared to have been induced by the police.
To support the challenge, the defence has requested that the State disclose the full video recording of the interview for review.
Justice Bulamainaivalu advised Mr Maisamoa to carefully review all materials provided so far to identify the specific legal issues he wishes to raise, noting that a trial date will be set during the next court appearance.
Mr Lovobalavu’s bail has been extended, and the case has been adjourned to July 15.
