Government operations should be handed over to civil servants now that we are in an election year, says Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre coordinator Shamima Ali.

Speaking during a news conference in Suva with FRIEND Fiji director Sashi Kiran on the latest estimates of Fiji’s poverty situation by the World Bank, she said good governance and good leadership demanded an interim government be established.

“If we are still living in a democracy, by now we should have a caretaker government,” Ms Ali said.

Ms Ali said a caretaker government would ensure that one does not have an undue unfair advantage.

“Political campaigning has started, so it’s in the interest of all of us.

“It’s good governance, integrity and honesty to have a caretaker government.

“In all democratic countries they have a caretaker government in place and they run it with the civil servants.

“We are calling on the government to let the civil servants run the country until elections and stop using government resources because elections year has already started.

“Stop giving freebies by using government money.

“They should use their own money.”

She urged people to exercise their rights to vote for the leader they thought was right for Fiji. Questions sent to Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum remained unanswered.
