IN the vibrant world of sports, it’s often the players who take the limelight; their feats on the field are celebrated and scrutinised by fans worldwide. But behind every striking image of athleticism lies a team of dedicated individuals, each playing a crucial role in crafting the narrative that captivates audiences.

Among these unsung heroes is Jonathan Tudreu, a 23-year-old graphic designer from Nabavatu Village in Dreketi, Macuata, with maternal links to Laselase Village in Nadroga. His creative flair breathes life into the visuals of the esteemed Fijian Drua rugby team.

Born and raised in Nadi, Jonathan’s journey into the world of graphic design began in his high school days at Natabua High School.

It was there that his passion for creativity blossomed, laying the foundation for his future endeavours. Fueled by his unwavering commitment to his craft, he pursued further education.

“When I was growing up, I always had a passion for the creative arts, so in my last years of high school, it started being serious,” he said.

In 2020, he enrolled in a graphic design course at the Fiji National University (FNU), honing his skills and expanding his knowledge in the field.

Three years later, armed with determination and a fresh perspective, he secured his first full-time job as a graphic designer.

Despite being relatively young and new to the professional scene, Jonathan’s talent did not go unnoticed. In December 2023, he joined the Fiji Drua team as a creative assistant, tasked with infusing visual branding with innovation and style.

“I’m still young and very new in my field of work, but I hope that I can inspire people to be creative and get a professional career from it.”

“We have an open office space, so everyone has a say on the artwork that I provide; however, the final approval comes from my manager.”

While many admire the striking graphics used in Fiji Drua team’s merchandise and promotional materials, few realise the meticulous effort behind some of the designs.

Jonathan is grateful for the work environment that he’s surrounded by, as it allows his colleagues to always bring in ideas about new designs.

“Usually my manager asks for specific designs that would fit well on the Drua social media pages, and I work from there.

Sometimes I come up with ideas, and if they like them, then they are approved. ”

His journey to recognition took an unexpected turn through his TikTok account, where he shared glimpses of his creative prowess.

His engaging content caught the attention of a broader audience, propelling him into the spotlight as a rising talent in graphic design.

“I think one of the main things that got me the job with the Drua team is my TikTok account, and I think most people don’t realize how much influence TikTok can have in today’s society.”

Beyond his professional endeavours, he finds joy in hobbies like basketball, swimming, and playing video games.

Yet, it is his aspiration to inspire future generations of creative artists that drives him forward.

“Don’t let anyone tell you that you are too young to be someone; always be humble and work hard because there are people who will see the potential in you.”

Jonathan Tudreu’s story serves as a reminder that behind every stunning visual lies the dedication and passion of individuals like him, shaping the narrative of sports teams and inspiring others to pursue their creative dreams.
