Extra Supermarket Girmit open tees off today at the Fiji Golf Club in Vatuwaqa, Suva.

The two-day competition serves as the first qualifier for the Fiji team to the 2027 Pacific Games in Tahiti.

During a press conference, tournament organiser Ganesh Chand says the event aims to raise awareness on the importance of remembering and celebrating Girmit Day.

“The games are special since it is the only sport besides chess held year after year to commemorate Girmit day,” said Chand.

Defending champion Taitusi Tuivuci says he is ready to retain his title. According to him, golf runs in his family and is pleased that his daughter and nephews will also compete in different categories during the two-day competition.

“I want to defend my title to inspire my children and family members aspiring in the sport,” Tuivuci said.

Am emotional Tuivuci expresses his gratitude to family for the support shown throughout the years of participation in the sport, that began at a very tender age.

“I began playing the sport as a junior at 9-years-old and now I’m 47. I thank my family for the support, and now my children are also participating in the sport,” he said.

With more than thirty years of experience in the sport, he is confident, looking forward to the tournament and expecting strong competition.

According to organisers, the tournament is expecting to feature at least 120 players beginning tomorrow.
