SUNITA Lal held on to her three-year-old grandson as they sat on the roof of their home outside Vunitogoloa, Rakiraki as floodwaters crept into their home early yesterday morning.
The deluge damaged almost everything they had.
The 60-year-old’s son, Niraj Lal, 31, looked on in despair as he watched his fishing boat drift 50 metres away from their home.
Mr Lal, who has been a fisherman for four years, was lost for words when a team from this newspaper caught up with the family yesterday.
“Right now we can’t think straight,” he said.
“Fishing is my only source of income as well as for my brother.
“I just bought several electrical appliances on hire purchase and they are now damaged.”
Mr Lal said this was the first time their house was flooded.
“I don’t know what to do. The engine of that boat cost me $1400. We need some help and we hope to be able to recover quickly from this but the rain is not over yet.”
