Government has set out a decade-long plan to overhaul Fiji’s education system, with a stronger focus on teaching quality, access for disadvantaged students and skills needed for employment and economic development.
To drive these reforms Cabinet has endorsed the 10-Year Education Sector Strategic Plan 2025/2026–2034/2035, which will guide education policy and investment over the next 10 years.
The plan identifies four key priorities — quality teaching and learning, equitable access, education for socio-economic development, and effective governance, policy and planning.
It proposes strengthening teacher recruitment and professional development while improving access to education for disadvantaged students.
The expansion of technical and vocational education and training (TVET), together with the introduction of green and emerging skills, is also among the reforms outlined in the plan.
A Government statement said the plan was developed through extensive consultations with stakeholders and aligned with the Fiji National Education Policy Framework, known as the Denarau Declaration 2024–2033, and the National Development Plan 2025–2029.
“The plan aims to ensure every Fijian child has access to quality, relevant and inclusive education, preparing learners for further education, employment and participation in a prosperous and sustainable Fiji,” it said.
Implementation will be monitored through a Results Framework aligned with the National Development Plan.
The plan will also rely on Government funding, cost savings and support from development partners.
Government said reforms would also strengthen education administration and monitoring, with the long-term focus on ensuring the education system better prepares students for further study, employment and participation in Fiji’s economic and social development.
