SANGAM Fiji’s annual general meeting ended in Nadi today without the election of new office bearers, following a dispute over nominations.
Current president Parveen Bala was due to contest the presidency against hotelier Damend Goundar, but a disagreement over the nomination process resulted in both sides entering discussions to find a way forward.
It was agreed that an interim committee would be formed to manage the affairs of Sangam Fiji until a new date is set for the elections.
“One thing is clear — the term of the current office bearers has ended today. So I suggested that we have an interim committee where Bala will be chairman and I will be co-chairman,” Goundar told the meeting.
“He will nominate seven people and I will nominate seven people.”
Bala told a gathering of more than 2,000 Sangam members that the interim arrangement was the best decision in the interests of Sangam Fiji.
Previous disputes at Sangam AGMs have resulted in legal battles, making the agreement to form an interim committee a significant development for the organisation.
