WHILE many young women her age are focused on enjoying their youth, 23-year-old Hibiscus contestant Temalesi Vakalawa Alutakua has chosen a different path — one centred on faith, teaching and community service.
With paternal roots in Kwaio, Malaita, Solomon Islands, and maternal ties to Lamiti, Gau, Ms Alutakua is a scripture teacher at CMFI College and Primary, where she works to nurture young people in faith, values and character.
She also serves in the ministry department at World Harvest Centre, taking part in youth outreach and weekly feeding programs for street-connected children and underprivileged families around Suva.
“It’s not just about the food, it’s about showing them love, sitting with them, praying with them, and reminding them they are not forgotten.”
Ms Alutakua said she entered the Miss Hibiscus contest not for fame, but to use the platform to encourage young people to recognise their worth and God-given purpose.
Her own journey has also taught her the power of forgiveness. She said learning to forgive was one of life’s hardest lessons.
“I’ve always tried to teach myself all the things that I’ve learned throughout were not to hold resentment. If God can forgive me, who am I not to forgive? That is a lesson I’ve learned in life.”
