THE CT scan machine at Labasa Hospital is now operational after being out of service for at least three years.
Health Minister Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu said the machine was expected to begin providing services this week, alongside training for staff.
“The CT scan is now operational. I am told they will begin service and training this week,” he said.
The unavailability of teh CT scan had forced patients requiring scans to seek services elsewhere or use private providers.
Dr Lalabalavu was asked whether the delay was because there was no expert available to operate the machine.
He said training was now being carried out as part of the process of bringing the service online.
“I just said there will be training and service done.”
When asked why the training was not conducted before the installation of the machine, he said the installation had to be completed first.
“The installation was supposed to be done first, then the training, which will concurrently be with the operation.”
The return of the CT scan service is expected to improve access to diagnostic imaging for patients in the Northern Division and reduce the need for them to travel or seek scans outside the hospital.
