Carpenters around the country are sitting at home because hardware shops are closed, says Nadi carpenter Sumit Kumar.

He said when hardware shops closed in containment areas, whatever work carpenters had, suddenly vanished.

“Before the hardware stores closed, we were able to find work at least two to three days a week but now, almost all the carpenters on Viti Levu are sitting at home,” Mr Kumar said.

The Yako, Nadi, resident said the reason for the holdup was because many people were waiting for building materials to be delivered to their homes.

“I have received the $90 government cash assistance but the question is how long will I be able to feed my family of five with that amount as nobody knows how long the containment and lockdowns will continue.”
