Cake culture

Cake culture

A group of concerned members of an NGO were planning an awareness campaign to curb non-communicable diseases.

This campaign was to commemorate the coming World Health Day on April 7.

A member proposed for a launching of the campaign. Guess what? A chocolate cake, fizzy drinks and some oily snacks were on the list for post launch refreshment.

What an irony! I mumbled. On one hand there is a real concern for the rapid growth in NCDs.

While on the other hand, the old culture of cutting cakes and consuming fizzy drinks is like a norm.

With due respect to the bakers and cake lovers. I suppose it is time to get away from the culture of cake cutting and fizzy drinks.

Instead, how about we place a large fruit such as a water melon and dissect this with a decorated knife.

It may sound witty but looking at the data for surgical amputation and death at early age because of NCDs, I believe it’s time to think outside the box and surely our thoughts must complement our action.
