IT was a time of discovery when settlers arrived at Levuka. On September 4, 1869, George Littleton Griffith founded The Fiji Times in a little office in the Old Capital.
That was 147 years today marking another milestone for the oldest local newspaper company.
On September 4, 1969, The Fiji Times printed a message from Queen Elizabeth as the newspaper marked a century.
It read: “I am commanded by the Queen to thank you for your loyal and affectionate greetings. Her Majesty sends her best wishes to the proprietors, staff and readers of The Fiji Times on the occasion of its centenary.”
The Fiji Times publisher Hank Arts said despite the challenges over the years, the newspaper has not failed in its duty.
“As we move towards our 150th year in publishing we feel it is appropriate to celebrate each birthday and reflect on where we have come from, what we have endured and what the future might hold,” said Mr Arts.
“There is no doubt The Fiji Times has withstood the challenges over all these years. This is a credit to all the owners, management and staff of the company over all these years and surely due to the steadfast belief in the importance of a free media.
“Also an acceptance by the paper to remain true to its charter of balance, credibility, honesty and a focus to deliver a paper that is informative and entertaining for our readers.
“Over the last five years, The Fiji Times has improved and modernised the business in production, graphics and information technology in order to ensure a robust business that can deliver on a daily basis, seven days a week and 365 days a year.
“Our way forward is also clear, remain committed to the charter that was first introduced by the original owner in September 1869. The company has moved into the future with its Fiji Times online and e-edition publication and is well placed to continue publishing what has become an icon for the reader of Fiji.”
