The Government is setting a clear direction for the next five years by prioritising Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a cornerstone of the National Development Plan (NDP).
This initiative aims to enhance research, development, and innovation (RDI) across both public and private sectors, positioning the nation to thrive in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0).
For context, RDI are activities that help create new products or improve existing ones like developing technology while the Fourth Industrial Revolution is about how new technologies like AI are changing industries and economies.
“Currently, there is minimal RDI activities being undertaken in both public and private sectors,” the NDP states.
“Generally, there is lack of understanding on the importance, benefits and returns from RDI.
“Given the onset of the 4th Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0), which is being driven by digitalisation, Fiji needs to adopt and apply these technologies in all aspects of its operation and development.”
According to the plan, by emphasising RDI and the application of technology, the Fiji Government aims to boost productivity, increase incomes, and create high-value job opportunities.
This focus is crucial for diversifying the economic base and enhancing resilience against external shocks.
To facilitate this shift, the government plans to collaborate with the private sector to develop policies and strategies that support RDI and technology adoption.
“The Government in consultation with the private sector will create and implement the policy, strategy, and institutional framework for RDI and promote technology adoption.
“RDI initiatives will focus in strategic areas that are consistent with development priorities such as in agriculture and in potential areas in the manufacturing and services sector as well as in environmental conservation and disaster risk management.
“There will be special attention on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and harnessing its benefits.”
The NDP indicated that the Government wants to use new technology to improve its economy and create better jobs by focusing on research and innovation.
