Drasa settlement farmer Tomasi Roba says the next government must ensure that low-income earners and the poor are able to feed their families.

He said people living under the poverty line were not able to properly care for their families because of the escalating cost of living.

“For a long time now we are seeing that what we bring home is not enough to feed our family,” he said.

“The money that we get from selling root crops or small jobs here and there is not enough to put food on the table.

“I just want a government that will make sure we are able to feed our families.”

Mr Roba said the high cost of living was putting a huge strain on the ability of the poor to make ends meet.

“It’s not like how it used to be when I was working as a young man. Before with $100 I could bring home lots of food and groceries for my family.

“Today, $100 is not enough to feed a big family. We can’t save any money for other expenses.

“We don’t live comfortably because we keep thinking about the next day and how we are going to look after our families.”

Mr Roba said he hoped the next government would seriously look at improving the lives of the poor.
