THE 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow was more than just another international competition for 17-year-old sprinter Adi Ceva Lutumailagi.
It was the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.
As the youngest member of Team Fiji, Lutumailagi embraced every moment of her maiden Commonwealth Games appearance, describing the experience as unforgettable despite the challenge of competing against some of the world’s best athletes.
“It was fun, surprising, and I really loved it,” she said.
The Nadi track star said simply qualifying for the Games was a personal victory as she always dreamed of competing on one of the biggest stages in international sport.
“The target was met. I finally made it to the Commonwealth Games. I’ve always dreamt of it and competing against athletes from countries like Canada, Jamaica, Scotland and England. It was an amazing experience.”
Lutumailagi said representing Fiji as the youngest athlete at another major international event was both an honour and a privilege.
“I have always been the youngest athlete going and competing in international games. I would say it’s an honour, and I’m so grateful. I’m still making my way, but I’m thankful to be there.”
She also acknowledged the unwavering support she received throughout her journey, expressing gratitude to her family, supporters and the Team Fiji contingent in Scotland.
“One big thank you to all my family and supporters who helped me in this journey with athletics, and to my other family who was with me in Scotland. Thank you for all the support, love and care. God bless you all.”
Lutumailagi encouraged aspiring young athletes to remain committed to their goals, saying success comes through consistency, faith and hard work.
“Stay consistent with training, keep pushing yourself and pray about it. Always put God first in everything, stay humble, get your family behind you and train hard.”
Although her Glasgow campaign marked the beginning of her Commonwealth Games journey, Lutumailagi has already shown the determination and maturity of an athlete eager to achieve even greater success in the years ahead.
