AT the opening ceremony of the Vodafone Fiji Secondary Schools Basketball Championships held at the Yet Sen School Hall yesterday, Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro delivered a simple yet powerful message to the students:
“Use this platform to discover your talents.”
He encouraged the young athletes to harness their abilities, explore the sporting opportunities before them, and use the game as a means of personal growth and self-improvement.
With 70 teams from 20 schools across the country competing for national honours in the under-15, U17, and U19 divisions for both boys and girls, this championship is more than just a tournament—it’s a crucial stepping stone for Fiji’s young talent.
The strong participation reflects the growing interest in basketball and highlights the important role school sports play in developing young people.
Radrodro emphasized the important role sports play within Fiji’s education system, not only as a path to national representation but also as a tool for holistic student development.

Following the successful conclusion of the secondary school rugby season and other school sports, the basketball championships reaffirm that sports remain an essential part of fostering strong character and nurturing future leaders in Fiji’s education landscape.
Basketball Fiji President Oliver Whippy says the competition has provided a strong platform for young players over the years, become a critical pathways to the national team.

The competition will continue today with the under-15 grade games to held at the Lambert Hall in Marist Brothers High School, the U17 at the Vodafone Areana in Suva and the U19 at the Yet Sen School Hall.
