Young girl allegedly drowns; Police investigate

Listen to this article:

POLICE are investigating an alleged drowning case involving a seven-year-old girl who died at the Naua River in Dreketi, Macuata, last Sunday.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the girl had accompanied her grandmother to a funeral when the incident happened.
Ms Naisoro said children needed to be closely supervised at all times, and that it was unfortunate that a child lost her life in this case.
“We are once again calling on parents and guardians to monitor their child’s whereabouts at all times,” she said.
“The current weather situation is also a concern if children are not closely supervised because they are often found swimming in flooded areas.”
The national drowning statistic stands at 13 compared to 14 for the same period last year.
