Tourism operator and owner of the world-renowned Nanuya Island Resort, Val Parker, was recently airlifted to Nadi for urgent medical treatment after developing a serious leg infection.
Ms Parker began feeling unwell last week while on the island. Her leg became swollen and painful, and her condition rapidly deteriorated.
She was initially treated at a medical facility on Nacula Island. After receiving first-line treatment, doctors advised that she required more advanced care.
Due to her age and the severity of her condition, she was airlifted from Nanuya to PSH Hospitals in Nadi.
The infection, later diagnosed as cellulitis, had spread to her bloodstream making it a high-risk situation requiring immediate intervention.
Ms Parker was received by PSH Hospitals’ medical team, who began targeted treatment straight away.
Thanks to the hospital’s rapid response and focused care plan, her condition improved quickly and smoothly.
The infection may have been triggered by an old injury.
Years ago, Ms Parker was pricked by a fish spine while swimming, which has since caused occasional flare-ups in her leg especially during times of fatigue or stress.
But this latest episode was the most serious yet.
Her daughter, Debbi Parker, who accompanied her during the emergency, praised the hospital’s support and professionalism.
“I was also relieved to be allowed to stay with my mother during the treatment, which made a difficult time a bit easier,” she said.
This was their first experience with PSH Hospitals, and the family said the care, staff, and service exceeded all expectations.
