Weather watch: Flood warning for low lying areas

Listen to this article:

A FLOOD warning is in place for low lying areas adjacent to Naqali and Waimanu rivers.

The Fiji Meteorological Services in its weather forecast issued at 3.30pm today stated that the flooding could erode or wash away road surfaces creating potholes or uneven surfaces which may not be visible.

Heavy rain conditions are also forecasted to continue in the next few days.

“The National Disaster Management Office is advising the general public to be prepared and take heed of the heavy rain warning,” the weather office stated.

“People residing in low lying areas should take heed of the warning and make preparations to evacuate to higher grounds well before flood waters rise.”

Parents and teachers have also been advised to monitor the whereabouts of children at all times and to keep them away from flooded drains or waterways.

“It is advisable to prepare and keep a family emergency kit at all times that include clean drinking water and canned/dried food for 3 days, a battery powered radio, a torch with spare batteries, medicine, essential documents, clothes, and other essentials,” a government statement said.

As an act of preparedness, be certain about the location of your nearest evacuation center. If unsure about your nearest evacuation center, contact your District Officer, District Advisory Councillor, or Village Headman.”

Members of the public can contact the Fiji Roads Authority by phone on 5720 to enquire about affected roads and crossings.
