MORE than 50 households in Nukulau Village in Nasau, Ra, have access to piped water after the successful installation of a second water source by an NGO.
Nasau district spokesman Meli Tokalau said the villagers had waited more than 40 years for this “luxury”.
“Our first dam was set up in 1975 and at that time only five houses were able to receive water in their homes,” he said.
“Since then the village grew to a point where we had about 30 houses that needed water.
“When the demand grew, the water pressure to each houses started to decrease, to the point where some new houses couldn’t get water at all.
“They would go to the nearby river to wash, clean and bath.
“So we were in desperate need of a new water source.”
He said after Tropical Cyclone Winston, new homes were built.
“We had more than 40 houses that were completely destroyed but after we rebuilt, nine more houses got water but that was still not enough.”
He said with the assistance of the a second dam was built to cater for the whole village.
“This is a very happy time for us because we finally have water in our homes.”
Paulini Tinai, 78, said village life was made easier with the new source. “I’ve lived here more than 30 years,” he said.
“Water was always something that we needed more than anything else. “Having this will ensure that my children and grandchildren will not go through what I experienced.”
