SUVA Rugby Union Marama captain Bulou Wainikiti Vasuturaga praised Kadavu for their resilience after guiding her side to a hard-fought 19-10 victory in round six of the Subrail Marama Championship at Suva Grammar Grounds yesterday.
The experienced tighthead prop, who is from Kadavu with maternal links to Tailevu, said the match carried extra meaning for her and lived up to expectations, with Kadavu’s dominant scrum providing one of the biggest challenges Suva faced throughout the contest.
“I want to acknowledge Kadavu because they gave us a really tough contest,” Vasuturaga said.
“Their scrum was very strong and they kept putting us under pressure, so we had to stay patient and work together as a team.”
Suva entered the halftime break knowing improvements were needed, and Vasuturaga said the coaches’ message became the foundation for their second-half performance.
“Our coaches reminded us to stick to the game plan they had prepared for us,” she said. “We trusted what they told us during halftime, and I think executing that plan in the second half helped us come away with the win.”
The capital side showed greater composure after the restart, controlling possession more effectively and capitalising on their scoring opportunities to secure the nine-point victory in front of their home supporters.
Although pleased with the result, Vasuturaga believes the competition remains wide open and insists Suva cannot afford to underestimate any opponent.
“Every women’s team is powerful,” she said. “We just need to identify our weaknesses clearly, fix them during training, and make sure we’re better in our next game.”
The round six victory gives Suva Rugby Union Marama valuable momentum in the Subrail Marama Championship as they continue building their campaign.
While the result was important, Vasuturaga said the team’s focus now shifts to recovery, training and correcting the small areas that could make an even bigger difference in the weeks ahead.
She believes consistency and discipline will be key as Suva prepares for another challenging test next round.
