TEAM Fiji athletes were told about how to use social media in a positive way during the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, later this year.

The advice was given during the Team Fiji workshop at the Grand Pacific Hotel (GPH) in Suva on Saturday.

Athletes and officials were briefed on how to use social media and how to act responsibly and sensibly to negative comments posted by other users and fans during the games.

Team Fiji chef de mission Tomasi Tiko said the workshop was to educate the athletes.

“One of the sessions we had was on social media. It was to help them maximise the use of social media and be cautious of the things which they should not do,” Tiko said.

“There are other things such as how to handle negative posts.”

It will be Tiko’s second outing as the chef de mission after taking the national side to the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas last year.

“We need to expose athletes to one of the elements that would contribute towards performing at the highest level.

“By exposing them hopefully, it would contribute towards their performance and start to apply,” Tiko said.

“The second element is the personal development plan for them individually and it is a secondary goal from the sporting career.

“It would help them to stay on track and they can achieve some of the goals they would set.”
