EVERY morning at the Suva Market, fresh trays of eggs are carefully arranged as customers begin to arrive.
Behind the stall is 32-year-old Alumita Tuwai, whose warm smile and dedication reflect the hard work that has kept her family’s business growing.
Originally from Koroqaqa in Ba and now living in Tacirua, Alumita married her husband in 2013.
While the egg business was his vision, it has become a shared family commitment.
Today, she proudly manages the stall, helping to provide a stable income for their family.
“This business belongs to my husband, but we work together to make it successful,” she says.
“It is how we earn a living and provide for our family.”
The business depends heavily on a reliable supply of fresh eggs from their supplier in Baulevu, Nausori.
However, nature often has the final say. Changes in weather can affect egg production, leading to shortages in supply and fewer trays available for customers.
“When the weather is cold, deliveries are usually lower because there are fewer eggs available,” Alumita explains.
“When there is less supply, there is less for us to sell.
Despite these challenges, the family has built a strong relationship with their supplier and has become one of its trusted buyers.
That partnership has allowed the business to grow steadily over the years.
Egg prices are determined by their size and weight, ensuring customers have a range of options to suit their budgets.
Whether purchasing a full tray or a smaller quantity, shoppers know they can rely on Alumita for fresh produce and friendly service.
Business is busiest from Thursday through Saturday, when the market comes alive with shoppers preparing for the weekend.
Over the years, Alumita has developed a loyal customer base, many of whom return regularly.
“We have many regular customers, when they come to the stall, we already know what they want. That relationship makes our work enjoyable. Together with her husband, Alumita is raising their young child while continuing to build the family business.
She believes working together as a family has been one of the greatest strengths behind their success.
“It takes sacrifice, commitment, and hard work, when families work together with the same goal, they can build a better future.”
She credits her husband for having the vision to start the business.
What began as a simple idea to sell eggs has grown into a reliable source of income, with hopes of expanding even further in the years ahead.
For young people, Alumita offers advice shaped by her own experience.
“Stay focused on your goals. There are many honest ways to earn a living if you are willing to work hard. Believe in yourself, be confident in what you do, and never give up.”
Alumita Tuwai’s story is a testament to the power of family, perseverance, and determination.
