FIJI will strengthen its operational readiness, emergency response systems and protection of critical infrastructure as it prepares for the possibility of a terrorist incident.
The National Counter-Terrorism Strategy 2026–2030, launched in Suva on Friday, stated that no country can completely eliminate the risk of terrorism.
The strategy warned that terrorism can emerge at the extremes of any ideology, cause or belief system and said Fiji must be prepared to respond and recover if an incident occurs locally or affects Fijians overseas.
It said operational systems and capabilities must be developed before an attack occurs, with the priority being to protect lives, minimise harm and support recovery.
The Fiji Police Force will be required to have the capabilities, training and legislation needed to respond swiftly and proportionately to a terrorist incident.
The Government will also work with divisional and district agencies, medical services and first responders to develop standard operating procedures and conduct regular exercises to test preparedness.
The strategy said effective emergency responses depended on strong leadership, clear plans and staff at all levels being empowered to perform their roles.
It also identified critical infrastructure – including electricity, water, transport, ports, airports and telecommunications – as vulnerable to terrorist attacks and other hazards.
