Cane farmers have been given three years of grace period to remove the unapproved cane variety from their farms and not supply any Fiji Sugar Corporation mills by 2027.

Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh said farmers have been reminded to slowly remove the unapproved variety of cane as it does not contain any sugar.

“It’s a waste because we are only buying cane sticks with no sugar,” he said.

“This variety only contains water which makes it heavy so we have given a very polite warning to farmers to phase out this variety by 2026.

“Government will also provide funding for this program to support farmers.”
