Taking a national team to an international tournament requires a lot of finances and Team Fiji is grateful for the support by Vodafone Fiji Ltd.
The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) together with Vodafone announced the Commonwealth Text & Win promo Hilux winner.
FASANOC chief executive officer Lorraine Mar shared revealed the amount of money spent in taking the team overseas.
“Vodafone was the sponsor for the Team Fiji that took part in the Pacific Mini Games in Saipan before the Commonwealth Games and we had 94 athletes covering eight sports,” she said.
“It cost us $1.17 million where we had to charge our own Fiji Airways flight to take the team to the games and back.
In Saipan, we won nine gold medals, 17 silver and 15 bronze medals.
“We had to take the team to Birmingham in England for the Commonwealth Games, so we had 99 athletes who took part in 11 sports and we won two silver medals and two bronze medals.
“It cost us $1.23 million for participation cost for Team Fiji. Vodafone come onboard and helped us meet some of those costs through texting competition. It was very helpful.”
She added that Vodafone would continue to support the efforts done by Team Fiji.
“Through this contribution it will help athletes such our bronze medal winner Taniela Rainibogi performs better in the future.”
The winner of the Toyota Hilux truck is Pram Reddy, a policeman in Navua and his family drove away with the $80,000 yesterday feeling happy. He said it was his first time to win such a big prize despite taking part in numerous texting promotions.
“I thank the Almighty God because I know it was his right time that I won this car,” he said.
