PANIC-STRICKEN Fijian students studying in Jiangsu Province, China, are trying to keep calm as the number of coronavirus deaths and confirmed cases continue to increase.

In response to queries from this newspaper, a student who spoke on the condition of anonymity said big and small cities in China had begun to close transportation services to control and minimise movement.

“In some places they have run out of stock of surgical masks and sanitisers,” the student said.

“Supermarkets are running out of food which is also contributing to the panic.”

The student said everyone in China had been advised to stay indoors and to only venture out if absolutely necessary.

“During this time we have been advised not to gather in large groups.

“Masks are absolutely necessary when stepping outside. “Students have been shopping in bulk and staying indoors to protect themselves against the virus.

“They are all following the procedures recommended by local Chinese doctors.”
