When Sudesh Prakash started his grass cutting business merely a decade ago, he was reluctant at first about investing in the trade. He was uncertain of the possibility of earning good revenue from it.
A couple of years later, the Votualevu, Nadi resident realised this sole trade was about dedication and commitment and ensuring he leaves a lasting impression on every job he did.
Today Sudesh, 54, is a well known grass cutter in the greater Votualevu and Sabeto residential areas.
He has never regretted doing what he does best because it had given him a whole new level of hope and the will to continue daily.
“I have been cutting grass for 10 years and I look forward to meeting new customers daily and give them the satisfaction they need when I cut the grass on their compound.
“The one thing I’ve learnt from this job is to do it very properly on every first chance I am given because it will leave a lasting impression.
“I have had so many customers who have called me up a few times to have their grass cut again and again and this has given me a lot of faith knowing that I am doing my job well.”
Sudesh looks after the welfare of his only son and his 84-year-old father at their Manganese Mine home and earnings from his grass cutting business are dedicated entirely to their daily welfare.
He leaves home daily at 6am to start his daily business and two homes is enough to cover for his daily costs.
He says that for the past seven years, he has been cutting grass at the Votualevu Cemetery and this has been his biggest revenue earner every month.
“It takes me three days to cut the whole area and I cut it every month for $250 and this covers for mostly our bills and some things we need at home.
“This is what I love the most about this job, I am my own boss and I don’t have to rely on anyone to tell me what to do and when to do it.
“If I’m not feeling too well, I will take a rest and continue the next day.”
Even though age is catching up slowly, Sudesh is not giving up on his business soon.
He believes he has a huge responsibility to provide for his father and only son and he will continue his grass cutting business.
“There is only one thing I learned from this job, if you want to work, look for it and you will find it. If you sit idle, you will not be able to find a good job to help you earn.”
