Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has reminded journalists to refrain from interfering with investigations against schoolteacher, Kishore Kumar.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum raised this issue during a news conference at the Suvavou House in Suva yesterday.

Mr Kumar had allegedly attacked National Federation Party member of Parliament Lenora Qereqeretabua by making public postings to embarrass her with references to pornography and immorality and had referred to her as a “porn star”.

He has been suspended by the Education Ministry, pending police investigations.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said there were many civil servants who had also made claims against Government on social media.

“Number of people have claimed things about ministers, many teachers made comments about Government but we did not pick up on that,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

He said journalists should let the two institutions conduct their investigations. “Let us not try and prejudice due process, given trial by media.

“I understand there has been a complaint lodged with the police and the Ministry of Education.

“So let these entities carry out their investigations, let them do their job.

“If a complaint has been lodged, let the investigations continue.”

He also said they had not appointed anyone to track what civil servants are posting on social media.

“Let me reassure you, there is nobody sitting at some room at the moment monitoring somebody’s social media comments or posts from Government’s side.”

Meanwhile, police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro confirmed that Mr Kumar was still being questioned.
