The Social Democratic Liberal Party will immediately address the Tertiary Education Loans Scheme (TELS) “debt trap” and improve job opportunities when it is elected into government after the 2022 General Election.

This was the promise made by SODELPA leader Viliame Gavoka in a statement issued to mark International Youth Day last week.

“It is regrettable that our youths are unable to focus on their personal and life skills development and furthering their education as they are burdened with the debt trap through the Tertiary Education Loans Scheme and lack of employment opportunities,” he said.

“This is a major policy matter that SODELPA will immediately address when we are elected to government after the 2022 General Election.

“Our youth play a crucial role in nation-building and must be provided a stable support system enabling them to develop and contribute positively to society.”

Mr Gavoka said Fiji was at an important period as it geared towards the 2022 elections.

He said “youths have the voting power and the importance of their participation has not come at a better time”. “We must encourage our young people to register and participate in this electoral process.”
